한국에서 미국으로 출발하는 여행사 일정표에는 모텔(Motel)이나, 인(Inn), 또는 라지(Lodge)라는 문구가 들어가면 안 된다. 반듯이 숙소만은 호텔이 여야 한다. 사실 미국 중간도시에는 호텔이 없는 곳도 많다.
미국 도시에는 할러데이 인(Holiday Inn), 라마다 인(Ramada Inn), 베스트 웨스턴 모텔(Best Western Motel ) 등 일류시설과 규모면 에서 조금도 손색이 없는 숙소(宿所)가 허다해도 미국 현지 여행사에서는 무조건 3류 라도 호텔만을 제공한다. 한국에서 모텔하면 무조건 러브호텔을 연상하기 때문이다. 인(Inn)도 그렇다.
우리나라 영어사전을 찾아보면 인(Inn)은 시골 여인숙, 또는 주막(酒幕)으로 변역 되어 있다. 라지(Lodge)는 더해서 오두막, 문간방, 산막, 수위실 등으로 번역되어 있다. 모텔은 러브 모텔이라서 안 되고, 인(Inn)은 여인숙이나 주막이라서 안 되고, 라지(Lodge)는 오두막이나 산막(山幕)으로 되어 있으니 더욱 안 된다. 인습의 차이로 인해 한국 사람들은 호텔만 고집하기 마련이다. 오늘 문제가 발생했다.
서부 5박6일 일정에 2박 째 되는 날 할러데이 인으로 손님들을 모셨다. 객실이 3백 개나 되는 대형 모텔이다. 도착해서 방 배정을 하며 키를 나눠 주는데 사람들이 난처한 얼굴로 “우리들을 모텔에서 자라고 하는 것입니까“ 어떤 사람은 주변 눈치를 살피며 저는 가족을 동반 했습니다. 모텔이라니... 이러면 안 됩니다, 절대로 안 됩니다 하며 통사정을 한다.
미국에는 한국식 러브 모텔이 존재하지 않는다. 베스트 웨스턴 Motel, 할러데이 Inn, 데이즈 Inn, 라마다 Inn, 콰러티 Inn. 트래블 라지(Travel Lodge)는 세계적인 체인으로 유명한 숙박시설들이다. 모텔은 1946년 캘리포니아 샌 루이스 오비스포 에서 여행 중에 잠자리와 자동차(Motor)가 같이 들어와 쉴 수 있는 곳이라고 하여 Motor과 Hotel의 합성어가 되어 Motel이 된 것이다.
Lodge는 여행 중에 음식을 해 먹을 수 있는 시설이 갖춰진 곳이며. Inn은 조용히 머물 수 있는 좋은 곳, 호텔은 집처럼 편하다는 단순한 뜻 뿐이다.
유타 주 캐납(Kanab)이라고 하는 곳은 브라이스, 자이언, 파웰, 아취스 국립공원을 가고 올 때 반듯이 숙박을 하고 가야 하는 교통의 삼각주이다. 캐납에는 숙박업소가 10여 곳이 있으나 호텔은 한곳도 없다. 모두 인(Inn) 아니면 모텔(Motel), 라지(Lodge) 뿐이다. 하여 한국인들을 겨냥해 한 업주는 쉴로인(Shilo Inn)을 쉴로인 호텔(ShiloInn Hotel)로 간판을 바꿔 달았다. 그리고는 한국인들로 언제나 성업 중이다.

짓밟힌 천재의 인권
1996년 12월 14일 특집 방영된 KBS '열린음악회'. 성악가의 멋진 무대에 이어 다음 출연자가 무대에 섰다. 뉴욕에서 활발한 활동을 벌이고 있다는 재미 재즈 바이올리니스트였다. 남자는 당시로선 생소하기 그지없는 전자 바이올린을 들고 나왔다. 청중은 마술처럼 현란한 그의 바이올린 연주에 흠뻑 빠져들었다. 클래식에서 대중가요까지 정열적으로 연주하며 무대를 뛰어다니는 그의 모습은 '로커'를 방불케 했다.
남자의 이름은 유진 박. 1975년 미국 뉴욕에서 태어난 그는 귀공자풍의 외모에 화려한 경력까지 갖췄다. 명문 줄리아드 스쿨(Julliard School) 출신, 10세 때 웨인 심포니 오케스트라와 협연, 13세 때 링컨센터 공연, NFL(미프로풋볼) 최대잔치인 수퍼볼 전야제 공연, 재즈의 거장 윈턴 마샬리스 사사(師事)…. 방송들은 앞다퉈 특집 프로그램에서 그의 배경을 소개했고, 콘서트를 중계했다. "바네사 메이(세계적인 전자 바이올리니스트) 못지않다"는 찬사가 쏟아졌다. 그의 첫 앨범은 15만장이나 팔려나갔다.
그렇게 잘나가던 유진 박은 2000년대 들면서 주류(主流)에서 멀어졌다. 공중파 방송이나 일간지 등에서 그의 소식을 찾아보기도 힘들었다. 그렇게 '잊혀진 천재'가 됐던 유진 박이 '연예계 화제의 인물'로 떠올랐다. 화려한 재기가 아닌 '감금·학대설'과 관련한 루머 때문이다. 그가 전 소속사에 의해 10개월간 모텔에 감금돼 5억원 상당을 갈취당했다는 내용이 온라인에서 급속도로 퍼졌다. 경로당 잔치에서 연주하는 장면 등 예전에 비해 '망가진' 모습의 사진과 동영상도 잇따라 올라왔다.
이에 대해 유진 박은 "여관방에서 1년 가까이 자장면과 볶음밥을 먹으며 갇혀 지냈다"고 밝혔다. 현재 그의 소속사측은 "유진 박이 작년에 소속사를 옮겼다"며 자신들과 무관한 일이라는 입장이다. 현 소속사 관계자는 언론과 인터뷰에서 "여관방 감금에 대한 논란은 전 소속사와의 문제"라며 "내가 그의 어머니와 함께 여관에 가서 구해냈다"고 밝혔다. 많은 팬들은 유진 박을 둘러싼 의혹들이 공신력 있는 수사기관에 의해 명백히 밝혀져야 한다고 믿고 있다.
2일 서울 능동 어린이대공원에서 공연을 마치고 돌아가던 유진 박 일행은 40여명의 팬들에게 둘러싸였다. 'WE WILL PROTECT YOU(우리가 당신을 보호해줄게요)'라고 적힌 팻말을 든 이들은 "현 소속사도 믿을 수 없다"며 "유진 박과 관련된 모든 의혹이 해결돼야 한다"고 소리쳤다. 이에 앞서 지난 6월, 유진 박과 관련한 중요한 사건이 있었다.
유진 박의 전 소속 기획사 사장이 신인 여가수에게 노예계약서를 강요하고 성폭행한 혐의로 구속된 것이다. 구속된 사장은 소속사 연예인들에게 온갖 '몹쓸 짓'을 했다. 유진 박도 사건의 피해자였다. 기획사측은 그에게 수치스러운 동영상을 찍게 한 뒤 협박을 했던 것으로 조사됐다. 유진 박은 언론 인터뷰를 통해 "지금은 괜찮다"고 자신의 심정을 밝혔지만, 의혹은 풀리지 않고 있다. 오히려 많은 팬들이 "심리적으로 정상적이라고 보기 어렵다" "인터뷰하면서도 눈치를 보고 있다"며 '유진 박 구명 운동'을 펼치고 있다.
유진 박은 천재 음악가였다. 하지만 사회생활에 관한 한 어린아이 같은 존재였다. 불행히도 그의 주변에는 그를 이용하려는 사람들이 더 많았고, 결국 그는 악몽 같은 시간을 혼자 견뎌내야 했다. 천재를 망가뜨린 건 우리 사회다. 경찰은 더 철저한 수사로 불법이나 인권 유린 의혹을 풀어야 한다. 국가인권위원회도 더 이상 팔짱만 끼고 있어서는 안 된다. 이제는 유진 박에게 그의 인권과 음악을 돌려줘야 할 때다. / 조정훈 사회부 차장대우 Wapple Club 2009.8.5 ☞취재 동영상 배경음악 아래 편집

You can even see kids playing in the middle of the road. Security is a major problem
because children and old people are not used to seeing cars, so they cross over the roads at any time,
without watching out for oncoming traffic. The only cars you can see sometimes on highways are
military ones, and most of them are stopped by the side of road, broken down. Or you can also see

to be heard after dark, and nightlife is virtually non-existent. only monuments are lit during local festivities.
Every hour, on the hour, from 6 am to midnight, loudspeakers blast out a patriotic song. Tourists are
